National Moth Week 2025: A Spectacular Celebration of Nature’s Night-time Wonders

Pritha Dey and Vijay Barve

National Moth Week 2025, held from 19th to 27th July, successfully wrapped up another exciting chapter of global citizen science and community engagement. The event brought together moth enthusiasts, scientists, families, and community members for a week-long celebration of these fascinating and often overlooked creatures.

Throughout the week, participants engaged in a variety of activities including moth-watching nights, educational workshops, citizen science projects, and guided nature walks. Attendance exceeded expectations, with over 1000 participants joining in the events both in-person and virtually.

“This year’s National Moth Week was a tremendous success, globally” said Vijay Barve, coordinator of DiversityIndia and a core team member of National Moth Week.

Pritha Dey, Country coordinator for India and core member of the IndianMoths community added “We were thrilled to see so many people come together to learn about the incredible diversity and ecological importance of moths. The enthusiasm and curiosity of our community were truly inspiring.”

In India, the IndianMoths community spearheads the National Moth Week celebrations, in association with numerous organizations such as DiversityIndia, iNaturewatch Foundation, Titli Trust, and Nature Mates Nature Club. Participants across India can register their private or public mothing events on the official National Moth Week website (nationalmothweek.org). Observations collected during these events contribute to global knowledge through the iNaturalist platform, helping to expand our understanding of moth biodiversity and geographical distribution.

One of the standout achievements of National Moth Week 2025 in India was the significant increase in public talks and educational sessions, compared to previous years. These talks, conducted by entomologists, naturalists, and educators, played a key role in boosting public engagement and awareness, reflecting a growing interest in moth conservation and biodiversity.

Highlights of the week included several public and private moth-watching sessions around the country, interactive sessions with entomologists, and the caterpillar rearing project in schools run by iNaturewatch Foundation, led by Shubhalaxmi Vaylure (core team member of National Moth Week).

National Moth Week is an annual event that encourages people of all ages to explore, document, and appreciate moths, promoting conservation and scientific research. We look forward to continuing this tradition and expanding outreach efforts in the coming years.
